The LED University™ initiative is an expanding community of
universities and LED industry leaders and innovators working
to promote and deploy LED lighting technology across the full
range of the campus infrastructure to help:
- Save energy
- Protect the environment
- Reduce maintenance costs
- Improve light quality for improved
visibility and safety
- Save tax and donor money
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 22 percent of
electricity used in the U.S. powers lighting. In a world with
soaring energy prices based on the availability and control
of fossil fuels, and with growing concern about sustainability
of the environment, a revolution in lighting is long overdue.
Launched in April 2008, the LED University
program is designed to accelerate the adoption of LED lighting
in an effort to significantly reduce the amount of electricity
used to power lighting on campuses throughout the world. The
initial participants North Carolina State University, Marquette
University, University of California at Santa Barbara, University
of Arkansas and Tianjin Polytechnic University in China have
each begun evaluating and deploying LED lighting in areas such
as offices, dormitories, parking garages, walkway lighting
and streets across their campus infrastructures.
As the program grows, the LED University community can foster
collaboration and efficiencies among universities as they deploy
energy-efficient lighting to expedite cost savings and environmental
benefits.

According to the U.S. Department
of Energy, in the next 20 years, rapid adoption of LED lighting
in the U.S. can:
— Reduce electricity demands
from lighting by one-third
— Eliminate 258
million metric tons of carbon emissions
— Avoid
building 40 new power plants
— Create financial savings that could exceed $200 billion |
